The Alben Solar Home
Donna Alben of Treasure Island Florida has recently had an energy efficient home renovation that includes a 3150 watt solar electric system with battery backup, a solar water heater, a water conservation kit, and a solar attic fan. Her electric bills have dramatically dropped to around $8 in the cooler months and $80 during the hottest summer months of Florida
Solar Electric System
This is a grid-connected system with battery backup. When the home is not using all of the power that the system is generating, the batteries can store this excess energy for use at night or at a later date.

This system consists of 18 SolarWorld Solar Photovoltaic Modules 175W each totaling 3150 kW, Sunny Boy SB4000US Solar Inverter, 2 SunnyIsland battery backup Inverters, 6 battery banks, and a UniRac mounting kit. |
|
The photovoltaic modules convert light - photon -into an electric or voltaic current. The inverter converts the low voltage direct current (DC) into higher voltage alternative current (AC) for general household use.

Solar Water Heating System
The solar hot water system is an Integrated Collector and Storage Passive system. Passive systems require no mechanical pumps or electronic components.
A solar water heater can produce 70% of a household water needs and save about 30% of electrical costs. If you want to go solar but are on a limited budget, consider a solar water heater first. With a much lower cost than a solar photovoltaic system, a solar water heater has a faster return on investment.

Solar Powered Attic Fan
The solar fan reduces energy costs by cooling the attic. It also helps reduce moisutre buildup and prolongs the life of the roof.
This is a 20 watt fan with a solar panel of crystalline cells and tempered glass. A thermostat is designed to turn the fan on at 80º and off at 65º. » Learn more
