Heat Pump Sizing
Sizing of a heat pump pool heater is based on the pool's surface area, geographic location, environmental conditions such as shading, wind, blanketing against night time heat losses, and more.
Below are general sizing guidelines assuming the pool is in full sun and a solar pool blanket is in use. The existence of shade over the pool will suggest a larger size heat pump. See all heat pumps

BTU: British thermal unit. A BTU is the measured amount of heat output the unit will produce. The BTU output will fluctuate with the outside air temperature and humidity levels
COP: The coefficient of performance of a heat pump is the measured ratio of kilowatt usage compared to the kilowatt output. The greatest value a heat pump provides a pool owner is to deliver a warm pool or hot spa at the lowest possible cost of operation.
FS: Full Season: All months where daytime temperatures are 50 degrees or above – generally this is twice the normal or traditional swim season, i.e. in northeast the traditional season is late May to the first week in September – full season is May 1st through November 1st (6 months) – our solar sizing map shows the full season capability nationwide
LS: Limited Season: Months where swimming may be possible without heat or with little heat needed.
The samples above show one heat pump for two different size pools: the smaller pool can be heated with the heat pump for the entire swimming season, the larger pool can be heated with the same heat pump but only during the hotter months of the year.
